Johnny B Goode, life, Maine, Meat Loaf, Meatloaf, Portland, rock n roll, State Theatre

(I’ll resume my posts about the retreat tomorrow. Today, I want to share my Meat Loaf story.)

November 5, 1999. I was store manager at a record store, playing a little music on the side, living in a lousy second floor apartment in Lewiston, Maine. It hadn’t been quite a year since Dad died, so my relationship with Mom hadn’t completely deteriorated yet. Things were still strange and tender. As ever, I was still looking for ways to connect with her and draw her out of her grief.

One of the perks of working at a record store, in addition to all those free CDs, is the near-constant flow of free concert tickets. This was the late 90s, before the ubiquity of cell phones and the proliferation of social media. Hype for artists, tours, recordings, and music in general was created one pair of eyes and ears at a time.

That morning at work, I found out there was a free pair of tickets available to see Meat Loaf that night at the State Theatre in Portland. When there were no takers amongst our crew, the first thing I thought was, I wonder if Mom would like to go. So I called her.

‘Hey, Mom. Do you wanna go see Meat Loaf tonight? For free?’

I seem to remember a long pause. ‘Ah, sure, why not?’ Exactly what I thought.

I left work early that day, and in my excitement I even locked my keys in my car at the 7-11 near my apartment when I was getting gas. Luckily, there was a kind stranger there with a pickup truck who had the tool required to get me on my way (just a quick shim on my ’96 Ford Escort wagon – a car that had nearly 300k on it when I junked it in 2004).

I went up to Hebron and picked up Mom in time to drive us to Portland and to the Indian place down the street from the venue to enjoy a nice dinner. I even remember getting a little bit of curry on my shirt, leaving a small turmeric stain that would never come clean for the duration of that shirt’s life.

The conversation during the meal was, as it always was in those grief-laden days, stilted and awkward. I think we were both eager to get to the concert, and to lose ourselves in the live music experience.

Our bellies full, we walked down the street and filed into the venue and took our reserved seats near the back. As soon as the music started, Mom and I were both more at ease. We paradoxically relaxed into the excitement of the show. Live concerts were something that my parents and I enjoyed so often in my youth. I saw so many shows with them of so many styles – Allman Brothers, Moody Blues, ZZ Top, Black Crowes, Grateful Dead, Jethro Tull, Phish, Rod Stewart, Michael Bolton, Tom Jones (my first concert, when I was nine!!), Jane’s Addiction, Motley Crue, Judas Priest, etc. etc. The list is a mile long. During my tenure at the record store, I went to countless shows at venues large and small around New England, seeing some legends and legends in the making – Ozzy, Motorhead, Moby, Fishbone, Faith No More, Mr. Bungle, Tool, Dick Dale, etc. etc.

Anyway, back to the Meat Loaf show –

There was a pattern forming in the band’s set list. They would perform a song or two, and then Meat Loaf would sit on a stool at the front of the stage and take questions from the audience. Black-clad roadies with boom mics would pace around the room to folks whose hands were raised.

‘Who are your favorites?’ and ‘How did you get your start?’ kind of questions poured in, and Meat Loaf kindly and entertainingly answered each one.

During the first round of questions, my mom leaned over to me at one point and joked, ‘You should ask him if you can play with him’, and we both chuckled.

The band started up again, and suddenly, I couldn’t let go of Mom’s idea. I couldn’t even hear the band anymore. My heart started pounding and my hands were sweating.

She sensed what was happening to my attention. The next round of questions began. ‘Go on, ask ‘im’, she goaded. I sat on my hands. I was too nervous.

The band started up again, and then something came over me. I started rehearsing my question over and over in my mind, thinking, What’s the worst that could happen? That he’ll say no and everyone will get a laugh? Which, of course, is what I absolutely knew would happen.

The third round of questions began and, as if it had a mind of its own, my arm shot into the air, and my mom smiled. Meat Loaf pointed and said, ‘The girl in the back with the blue shirt.’ When he said that, I remembered the stain from dinner. Then my mouth went dry as the boom mic approached, and against the thundering of my heart, then I heard myself say:

‘My name is Heather, I’m 23 years old, I play piano, and I’d love to play some rock ‘n’ roll with you.’

And without missing a beat, Meat Loaf said, ‘You’re on.’

And my heart almost stopped.

A cheer came up from the crowd as another black-clad roadie came down the aisle to accompany me to the stage. I made my approach, up the little wooden stairs, and then there I was, suddenly shaking Meat Loaf’s hand, and I turned around to see a sold-out crowd of over a thousand people who were cheering. Cheering for this moment!

I nearly shat myself.

The keyboard player stood up from the bench of the electric baby grand with flames painted on the side. Badass, I thought. He watched me take his seat, smiling and curious.

Meat Loaf turned to me and said, ‘We’re gonna play Johnny B. Goode in the key of A, how does that sound?’ And I said, ‘Sure!’ I played a few licks on the piano in the key of A, just to try and warm up my nerve-wracked, ice cold hands, and Meat Loaf’s head was on a swivel. The crowd went crazy!

Suddenly, I wasn’t nervous anymore. I was friggin’ PSYCHED. Let’s do this!

Someone – probably Meat Loaf himself – counted the band in, and we played ‘Johnny B. Goode’, and I took at least one solo, maybe two. I didn’t hold back. I let ’em have it.

It was one of the wildest and most fun moments of my life.

When the song was over, the crowd was on their feet, screaming. A standing ovation halfway through the show! For little ol’ me. I’ll never forget the smile Meat Loaf gave me as I was leaving the stage. It was certainly not what either one of us was expecting.

For the rest of the show, I sat in my seat, completely stunned, unable to stop smiling. People in the row in front of us kept turning around to look at me, and they were smiling too.

Towards the end of the set, another black-clad person tapped on my shoulder and said, ‘We would like your contact info.’ He handed me a small pad and a pencil, and in perfect penmanship, I wrote my name, address, and phone number.

When the show was over and we were all filing out onto Congress Street, I got all kinds of ‘Woo!’ and high fives. Then, several different people approached me with a question: they all wanted to know how far in advance this had been planned. They really thought it had been set up!

And each time I laughed and said, ‘I didn’t even know I was coming to this concert until this morning!’

They talked about it on WBLM, the big classic rock station in Portland. It might have been mentioned in the local news, and the Portland Press Herald, too. ‘Some girl got up and played with Meat Loaf…’

And of course, if something like that had happened now, there’d be grainy cell phone videos of the thing all over social media.

This may sound weird, but I kinda loved the anonymity of it. I loved that the news and radio never found out or mentioned my name, like it was just this crazy fluke thing that happened – because it WAS this crazy fluke thing that happened. This wild, beautiful, random, awesome thing that a roomful of 1000+ people got to share one wild, beautiful, random, awesome night.

To be completely honest – at the time, I did it for Mom. And then once I was up on that stage and sat at that piano, I did it for me.

23 years later, it almost feels like a strange dream I once had.

‘Yir faither would’a been s’proud,’ my mom kept saying later that night on the quiet, surreal drive home. We both missed him so much.

And you know, I never did hear from Meat Loaf’s people. It’s okay.

Rest in peace, Meat Loaf. And may many more wild, beautiful, random, awesome things wait in store for all of us.

Congrats to “Johnny Gags”, winner of the “Flight of Fancy” video contest!  He takes home the $500 gift card to his choice between Amazon, Apple, Best Buy.  Nice job, Johnny!

Next week, I’ll be back on the road – this time, to Fort Myers, Florida – for the Listening Room Festival!  Shawn and I will be down there for several days of house concerts, showcases, radio and TV appearances (and of course to soak up some warmth and sun)!  If you’re in South Florida we would really love to see you!  More details and info at www.listeningroomfestival.com.

Hello friends!

It feels like it’s been a while since I last wrote to you.  How have you been?  Doing well, I hope.  Here in the North, it’s truly hard to believe that fall has arrived.  The foliage is  already on spectacular display here.  As for me, I’ve been taking advantage of the recent ease in my schedule to spend time with friends, work on more writing, check out open mics in other towns in Maine, New Hampshire and Massachusetts, and, of course, I’ve been preparing for the release of The Open Road.   (Hmm, not much of an ease in the schedule now that I read that paragraph over!  I suppose I’ve always been well versed in keeping myself happily busy. 🙂 )

Here’s the upcoming schedule, including a couple of days at the larger-than-life and super fun Fryeburg Fair!

Tuesday, September 25th

Tonight!  I’ll be back in the dining room of the Mount Washington Hotel in lovely Bretton Woods, NH from 6 to 10 p.m.  It’s been a while!

Saturday, September 29th

Another night with TDM!  This time, we’ll be bringing our blues and rock show back to Tower Hill Tavern in Laconia, NH.  We hit at 7 p.m.

Sunday, September 30th

Shawn and I will be at The Red Parka Pub in downtown Glen, NH from 5 to 8 p.m.

Tuesday, October 2nd

The Open Road will be here!  Oh, and just a quick reminder – there are tickets available for the CD release shows scheduled for next month and you can purchase them right on my homepage at www.heatherpierson.com.

Wednesday, October 3rd

Shawn and I will perform at the Fryeburg Fair on the Gazebo Stage for three sets at 1, 2 and 3 p.m.

Thursday, October 4th

We will bring the duo show back to Andy’s Old Port Pub in Portland, ME, for 6:30-ish p.m. start.

Friday, October 5th

I’ll be back at “home base” at The White Mountain Hotel in North Conway, NH from 6 to 10 p.m.

Saturday, October 6th

A double!  Shawn and I return to the Fryeburg Fair’s Gazebo for three more sets, starting at 9 a.m. (let’s hope it’s warm and sunny like it was last year!) and then I’ll be back at my seat at the piano of the White Mountain Hotel again at 6 p.m.

That’s all for now!  I do hope to see you or hear from you soon.  Thanks, as ever, for your love and support.  I know I always say that but I really and truly mean it from the bottom of my heart.   Take good care!

May is off to a gray start here in New England weather-wise — but that beautiful color of green that is painting the landscape and the tips of all the trees is so incredible!  It’s the same color that has overtaken the kitchen counter here at the house — so many seedlings of tomatoes, cukes, leeks, basil, parsley, dill, lettuce and chard waiting to be planted outside in just a few weeks.  What an amazing time of year!

And busy, too!  Here’s what’s happening in the next couple of weeks:

Saturday, May 5th

Tonight! My dear friend of many, many years, singer/songwriter Nate Towne, will be releasing his second CD, Empty Tables and Chairs, at a very special show at Tucker’s Music Pub in Norway, ME! I’m psyched to be joining him along with some other awesome musicians (including the amazing Rusty Wiltjer on his beautiful handmade drums) as part of the celebration. 8 p.m. start — and no cover charge!

Wednesday, May 9th

I’ll be the guest host and feature at Conway Cafe’s Songwriters Showcase!  Every Wednesday, Conway Cafe, located in the heart of the village of Conway, NH, opens its doors and its stage to songwriters of all stripes to come share their talents.  6 to 8 p.m.  Come early for the buffet, and stay for the great offerings from the wide variety of players who come out to support this great event every week!

Thursday, May 10th

Shawn and I return to Portland, ME to perform at Andy’s Old Port Pub on Commercial St.  Our first outing there was very well received and we’re excited to return!  7 to 10 p.m.

Friday, May 11th

I’ll be at “home base” – playing solo in the Ledges Dining Room of the White Mountain Hotel in North Coanway, NH from 6 to 10 p.m.

Wednesday, May 16th

The Heather Pierson Quartet (with Shawn Nadeau on bass, Matty Bowman on drums and Joe Aliperti on sax) will hit Delaney’s in North Conway, NH from 9 p.m. to midnight.  Bring your dancing shoes!

Thursday, May 17th

I’ll be travelling downstate with The Jeremy Dean Band to play at Strange Brew Tavern in Manchester, NH from 9 p.m. til the wee hours.  Blues, blues and more blues is what we’ll have on tap!

That’s it for now.  I’ll send an update down the road about the rest of my May calendar.  Be sure to connect with me on Twitter (@HeatherPierson) and Facebook (HeatherPiersonMusic) to get the inside, day to day scoop on what’s happening in my world.

Oh, and check this out — it’s the first song from my and Shawn’s recent appearance on Great Falls TV in Auburn, ME!  Enjoy – and thanks much for your love and support!

Hello there!  I can’t even believe that it’s already April.  Here in the Northeast, the snow is pretty much gone now, trees everywhere are budding and daffodils are starting to burst through the soil.  Folks are planning their gardens and starting seeds indoors, enjoying the longer days and abundant sunshine.  There’s still a bite of chill in the air, but the warmth of the sun holds the promise of the summer that will be here before we know it!

Shawn and I had a fantastic time this past weekend in Cape May, NJ, showcasing at the 5th annual Singer-Songwriter of Cape May conference.  We attended workshops and talks during the day and, of course, spent a good amount of time walking along the lovely side streets and beaches.   The highlight was our very well-received performance at the Merion Inn before a packed and attentive house!

I’m also excited to announce that the Heather Pierson Trio has grown into the Heather Pierson Quartet with the addition of the fabulous Joe Aliperti on saxophone!  Joe’s soulful playing adds another new dimension to the live show and I’m looking forward to more shows with the four of us (including one later this month — read on!).

Here’s what’s happening:

Friday-Sunday, April 6th – 8th

I’ll be playing a whole lot at the White Mountain Hotel in North Conway, NH this weekend!  Friday and Saturday night, I’ll be doing the usual 6 to 10 p.m.  On Easter Sunday, I’ll be playing starting at 1:30 p.m. for the hotel’s holiday brunch.   In the area this weekend and interested in reservations?   Call 1-800-533-6301.

Wednesday, April 11th

My big brother Jeremy Dean and his lovely daughter Emma will be the feature at this week’s Songwriters Night at Conway Cafe, located in the heart of Conway Village.  6 to 8 p.m.  I’ll be in the audience, and you should be too.  Their vocal harmonies are exquisite and not to be missed!

Thursday, April 12th

Maine Songwriters Association presents Songwriters in the Round at Blue on Congress St. in Portland, ME.  MSA board member Phil Daligan hosts this intimate evening starting at 6:00 p.m.  I’m looking forward to being one of three featured songwriters that evening!

Friday, April 13th

Friday the 13th!  We’ll be celebrating the day in Portland, ME again — this time at Andy’s Old Port Pub on Commercial St.  It’ll be the first time Shawn and I have performed here and we’re psyched!  Music starts at 9.m.

Saturday, April 14th

I’ll be performing solo at The Cave, underneath the famous Mount Washington Hotel in lovely Bretton Woods, NH!  I start at 9 p.m.

Monday, April 16th

Shawn and I return again to Portland, ME to play for the first time at Flask Lounge, located at 117 Spring St.    We start at 9 p.m.   I hope that you Portland-area folks will come out to support us at these new (to us) venues!

Thursday, April 19th

The Heather Pierson Quartet (Shawn Nadeau on bass, Matty Bowman on drums and Joe Aliperti on sax) will rock the house at McGrath’s Tavern in North Conway, NH.  9 p.m.  So psyched for this show!

That’s it for now — I do have some really exciting shows for the end of the month, including a very special evening with my dear friend and songwriter extraordinaire Davy Sturtevant, plus an Earth Day Celebration that you won’t want to miss!    Thanks to all for your continued love and support!

Gotta keep moving to stay warm!

Fall is here  – or, at least, it certainly doesn’t feel like summer anymore!  I actually wore a winter hat a couple of times this past week.  Have I really gotten that wimpy?  Well, as my father used to say, you gotta keep moving to stay warm, and that’s precisely what I intend to do this coming week.  It’s a busy one!  Here goes:

Monday, September 19th

I’ll be hosting open mic at the Red Parka Pub in Glen, NH from 9 p.m. til the cows come home.  Joining me to hold things down will be Shawn Nadeau on the bass and Matt Bownman on the drums.

Tuesday, September 20th

It’s been a dog’s age since I’ve been over to see Jon Sarty and the rest of the gang at Wildcat Tavern in Jackson, NH for Tuesday Night Hoot Night, so I’ll be heading over with my friend Davy Sturtevant to try out some of our tunes.  We’ve been calling ourselves “Stew & Pie”.  Things get going around 8:30 p.m.

Wednesday, September 21st

I’ll be playing with two of my favorite people on the planet – that is, with Jeremy Dean on guitar and Shawn Nadeau on bass – at Delaney’s Hole In The Wall in North Conway, NH from 9 p.m. to midnight.

Thursday, September 22nd

Shawn and I host open mic night at Ledgends Pub in Gorham, NH from 8 to 11 p.m.  Last time we were up there, JD and Matty surprised us and came by and we tore the roof off the place!  I wonder what’s in store for this week…?

Friday, September 23rd

It’s an evening of live jazz with yours truly and Shawn on the fretless at Dogfish Bar and Grille, located at 128 Free St. in Portland, ME from 8 to 11 p.m.  It’s also a new venue for us, so we’re pretty psyched!

Saturday, September 24th

I’ll be back at the White Mountain Hotel at Hales Location in North Conway from 6 to 10 p.m.

All that should keep me warm this week, eh?  Hope you’re warm and cozy wherever this finds you!  Thanks for your love and support, and I hope to see you at a show sometime!  🙂

Some very cool shows this weekend!

Bike Week is nearly over and it’s been awesome to see and hear all of the bikes out on the road — and this year it’s been even more awesome to be one of the throng out there on my very own bike!  I get to be one of the cool kids!  Woohoo!

Speaking of cool kids, I get to be a cool music kid this weekend with some very cool shows.  Here’s the scoop:

Friday, June 17th

I am sitting in with my big brother’s band, The Jeremy Dean Band – featuring the formidable Kenny Oakes on bass and the always very helpful Mick Collins on drums.  We’re playing at The Red Parka Pub in Glen, NH starting at 9:00 tonight.

Saturday, June 18th

A double-header!  First, Shawn and I are performing in Harvard Square in Cambridge as part of Make Music Harvard Square Volume 4.  We will be at the Deguglielmo Plaza, located at 27 Brattle St. in Cambridge at 2 p.m. for a 45 minute set.  This is going to be a very good time!  We better see you Boston-area people out in force tomorrow!

Then, later that night, Shawn takes off for a show in Laconia with Jeremy, and I’ve got a solo show at Blue in Portland, ME, located at 650A Congress St.  I start at 8 p.m. and will be playing a 90 minute set.

Sunday, June 19th

Shawn and I will perform at The Met in North Conway from 2 to 4 p.m. for a nice mellow end to the weekend.

Hope to see you all out and about!

It’s a gorgeous day today as I write this, and I’ve already gone for a spin on the bike.  Shawn and I are off to do some hiking in them thar hills.
